Taro Chatung
“Tongam Rina, senior journalist of Arunachal Pradesh has been selected for a prestigious media award of a great Country like German titled "Prize for the Freedom and Future of the Media 2013" instituted by Media Foundation, Leipzig, Germany for her commitment in the field of journalism.” I think, this news has not only brought happiness to her and her family members, surely it has also brought happiness to her friend circle, well wishers particularly for media fraternity of Arunachal Pradesh, India. I also take this opportunity to congratulate Tongam for winning such worldwide known award and do extend my sincere gratitude to Media Foundation, Leipzig, Germany for conferring her this award.
With her award Arunachal State has already entered in the Global Journalism Map which is so encouraging for press fraternity of this state. I wish young journalists of this State should have determinant to serve the state and its people in future without fear and favour by putting journalism in first which will help bringing transparency both in development and backlog of this Arunachal Pradesh.
Very often I come across the people who are speaking about freedom of media in Arunachal State, I think such people may become first person to abuse media people or vandalize media houses if media people honestly carry a story highlighting his/her involvement in corruption or scam. And I wish such people should try to know the role of media in depth particularly in a state like Arunachal Pradesh. Or such people may probably never write any story against their own relatives even if they join in media.
Lastly I wish wisdom prevail upon them so that they could know actual situation the media people of this state are working with.
However, at the end I am happy to convey everyone, at least a small level of awareness on free and fair media and its importance has already come up in the mind of people of this state. Future is bright in this field of journalism. (The writer is a Senior Journalist of Arunachal Pradesh)

Such monumental fiasco is not unique to Arunachal Pradesh alone. Take our Taj Mahal for a more classic example or the Red Fort, Ajanta and Ellora Caves, if the local Buddhist temple isn’t satisfying enough. The Romance Pageant which has been surviving since the British Raj (The Taj) has now obliviously seen a more modern Edward and Bella phase with hilarious graffiti. Edward is indianised with Rakesh and Bella replaced with a more chubby Pinky. So here we have Rakesh loves Pinky and other designer names engraved all over the walls often enclosed in a Cupid heart. Waah Taj! Had Mumtaz been alive she would have preferred laying back in her grave for the nauseating feeling the sight evokes.
Scrutinizing all the areas, Archaeological sites are the best places for a safe ‘hangout’ for all the possible security it offers; more often than not they are built in the outskirts of the city, have several ‘bhool bhulaiya’ type corners, large and wide tombs for an emergency hideout and the best part is such historical places often come marinated with horror stories.(Kudos to those creepy TV serials which mystify our Havelis and Palaces for fanning their TRPs and subsequently dematerialize our heritage sites)
All this is happening in our contemporary culture for our lack of respect for the past. What legacy are we leaving behind? Who is to be blamed? The ASI people? Agreed that they are concerned. They even play, plough and take the field well enough then why are the monuments still slaughtered by such trash habits of our own Indians? We often (more often) imitate our old dictators and are still under the Western hangover then why don’t we take in their manic adherence to cleanliness and reverence for the sanctum places?
While I am paralysed by this playful vandalism, I rise to my feet with a sheer rush and crane for a better view to guesstimate where are we heading to. Touristically speaking, we are blemishing our own past and adding another badge of disgrace on our country. I have always seen an ambivalence in the gesture of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’. Its like, inviting someone to appreciate the beauty of a Zombie! Come on, India is no longer a golden bird. And about India being ‘incredible’, well stop telling lies and maybe I will stop writing truths about my own HOMELAND. Jai Hind!

ITANAGAR, Jul 13: The fine system has badly dented the image of state. The culture of collecting fine against person killed in unfortunate accident is rampant in various parts of state especially in capital complex region. In some cases, person demand heavy amount of money just for minor road accidents. Private taxis of Assam dread to enter Arunachal especially capital complex out of fear.
It is generally assumed by everyone that most of the citizens hailing from capital complex region are the one who follow fine system. However, there are many citizens who strongly oppose this social evil and are working hard to eradicate it.
Losing a family member in any kind of unfortunate accident is deeply saddening. However, if a person collects fine in the name of death soul, it is more unfortunate. It’s a big question how someone can even think of taking money for such unfortunate incident. It is also wrong to think that every citizen hailing from capital complex region practises fine system.
Contrary to the popular belief, recently one Nabam Niki of Hollongi village under Papum Pare district refused to accept any fine after his son was killed in an accident at Doimukh. On 23rd May 2013 his son who on a bike was hit by private vehicle near Tourism welcome gate Doimukh. The boy died because of the accident and later family lodged criminal case against one Tadar Tubin whose vehicle had caused death. The members of two family conducted local mel (meeting) from 20th to 22nd June to settle the case. The family member of deceased boy refused to accept any fine and decided to forgive the person who caused death of their beloved son.
Meanwhile, secretary of Nabam Youth Association (NYA) Nabam Tamar urged people to
learn from this incident. “We hope this will set an example and hopefully others
will emulate it. We have to understand that accident happens accidently. Demanding
fine with threat of revenge killing if fine is not paid is very wrong practise. We
are living in modern world and its time our people change their mentality,” said
Nabam Tamar. He further added, “People also need to understand that everyone does
not believe in fine system. One whole tribe should not be blamed just because some
member collects fine. “The fine system has damaged the image of state and its time
